Photography selections from Kumi Oguro’s “Hester”

On display through October 22.

Kumi Oguro is a Japanese photographer, based in Antwerp, Belgium since 1999.

Oguro works with female models in staged settings, to create a world without any logical flow or narrative, which is similar to our dreams.

During her twenty-year career, 2 photobooks have been published: NOISE (2008) and HESTER (2021).

The works included in these publications are not from 2 separate series. They are a continuation in which you can find her development, transformation and also what is consistent.

For Kleine Galley n, Oguro has selected works from HESTER.

In HESTER, her photographs from 2008 to 2018 are bundled together.

HESTER is the title of one of the photographs featured in this publication and originally taken from a character in the novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving. She is drawn to this particular fictional woman, Hester, because of her extreme nature; she is an extrovert, aggressive and chaotic, but also sensitive, loving and charming.

Oguro affectionately calls all the women in her photographs ‘Hester’.

She has studied photography in London and Antwerp. She also completed studies in film and image studies and culture at the University of Antwerp.

Oguro has participated in exhibitions and art/photography fairs in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan.

The Collision Project

The Collision Project is a platform for artists and visionaries to collaborate and express ideas using the built environment as their canvas. Founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2017 and launched in Europe in 2020, we aim to bring accessibility and playfulness to art for the viewer and for the creators. The Collision Project nurtures art as experience and operates on the principle that progress requires public space where the transfer of energy and ideas can be explored.
